Flooding prompts Eastern Bay road closures

A number of roads in the Opotiki district are closed following yesterday's downpour.

In rural parts of Opotiki Gault Road, Otara East Road, Toones Road, the Motu Road, and Pakihi Road are all closed today.

Waiotahe Valley Road at Watsons Flats is passable for 4-wheel drives with caution along with Ohiwa Harbour Rd.

In the urban area of Opotiki Albert Street is closed to through traffic along with Church Street at the Albert Street end.

Motorists travelling between Opotiki and Whakatane are able to do so through Wainui Road.

A number of roads across the Whakatane District remain closed, following heavy falls overnight.

Pokairoa, Rewatu, White Pine Bush, Taneatua and Ngamotu Roads all remain closed due to flooding.

A slip has also closed Stanley Rd at the Waimana Gorge end and council predicts its likely to re-open late tonight or tomorrow

State Highway 2 in the Waimana Gorge remains closed due to flooding at Burnett Road. A detour is in place through Wainui Road

Meanwhile, Galatea road has opened to one lane after a slip at Te Mahoe.

Flooding has also receded on State Highway 2 between Awakeri and Tāneatua and the road is now open for access in and out of Tāneatua and Ruatoki

Reid Road and Awahou Road are passable with caution due to significant surface flooding

Matahi Valley along with Ruatahuna have also reopened with Contractors clearing small slips.
