Bay children get fed in new government scheme

KidsCan is welcoming a new lunch fund for Bay kids, but say the job is far from done.

The Government’s announced a new lunch fund for some primary and intermediate schools in the Bay of Plenty/Waiariki area.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern made the announcement yesterday in Rotorua and says it's an important step to strengthen support for Kiwi kids in hardship.

From 2020, the Government will fund daily free lunches for year 1-8 students in selected schools with high levels of disadvantage in the region. The programme will expand into 120 schools by 2021.

KidsCan’s CEO and founder Julie Chapman says, This is a great step in the right direction by the Government.

She also says we alone can’t keep up with demand for our programmes, as we still have 38 schools and more than 100 early childhood centres waiting for help. So this Government fund is needed, but the job isn’t done.”
