Whakatāne High School has issued a statement to its community after becoming aware of a video that shows a former student engaging in animal cruelty.
In a message sent to parents and caregivers, the school made it clear it strongly condemns the behaviour depicted in the footage.
“We have been made aware of a video showing a former Whakatāne High School student committing an act of animal cruelty. We certainly do not condone this behaviour,” said the statement.
The school also clarified that the individual involved is no longer enrolled.
The school acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and confirmed that authorities are involved.
According to the principal, it is their understanding that the New Zealand Police have been notified.
Whakatāne High School says it will fully cooperate with any investigation into the matter.
Regional SPCA Manager, Jason Blair said "SPCA is aware of this footage which we understand is both distressing and concerning."
"As this is a police matter, we are available to assist them with any enquiries and cannot comment further."
