The votes are in, and Ōhope has snatched up bronze in the Best Family Beach category and silver in the Best Camping Beach.
The popular Eastern Bay beach was nominated in three out of five categories: Best Family, Best Camping, and Best Surf.
Its neighbour, Ōtarawairere, found itself in the running for Best Hidden Gem, although it did not place on the podium this time.
The community had high hopes, as the beach had held the Best Beach crown in 2021, 2023, and 2024.
Despite Ōhope being trumped by Norland’s Waipū Cove, Whakatāne District Council is “still pretty thrilled.”
“Ohope is still very much one of Aotearoa's most loved and best beaches.”
Council senior tourism marketing advisor Anna Williams said while winning Best Beach does help draw people to the area, Ōhope is already firmly established as one of Aotearoa’s most loved beaches.
“We can still attract people because of that. It's a huge drawcard and has been for decades.”
She said the wins in Best Family and Best Camping came as no surprise.
“You can expect to have a most amazing family holiday here. We are perfect for families, safe swimming, plenty of space for everyone, plenty of activities to do for families, beautiful warm water,” added Williams.
She explained that Ōhope has lots of beautiful camping spots around the area, which makes it the perfect beach for a summer holiday.
“Obviously, it's always great to be the winner, but we're pretty happy."
