Crossing Options on the Table for Busy Ōhope Road

Consultation closes at midnight on Monday, October 26. IMAGE // Whakatāne District Council

Ōhope residents are being asked to choose between three pedestrian crossing options for Pōhutukawa Avenue, which could be delivered alongside planned road resurfacing in February next year.

The options cover the stretch between West End Road and Mair Street, where pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles share one of Ōhope’s busiest areas.

Two raised platforms would cost $100,000, two raised zebra crossings would cost $120,000, while a speed hump and raised crossing would cost $80,000.

Each option would mean the loss of between three and nine car parks.

Council transportation manager Ann-Elise Reynolds said the options are designed to balance safety, accessibility, parking and cost.

“These options show what each of those choices would mean for Pōhutukawa Avenue,” she said.

The council is also asking whether improvements around Mair Street, including parking and beach access, should be a priority for future investment.

Reynolds said community feedback will help inform the council’s decision.

“We really want to hear what people think. Their feedback will be part of the information the Council considers when it makes its decision,” she said.

Consultation closes on October 26, with a decision expected in December.
