The Ōpape Marae and Urupā Trustees placed a Rāhui over Ōpape Beach yesterday afternoon to protect people and the whenua.
Erosion issues impacting the beach front roadway have been cause for concern for pedestrians, vehicles and those on the beach.
The Rāhui impacts general access along the beachfront area, launching boats from the beach and any activities that may compromise safety while waiting for remedial works to begin.
An update is expected once work begins.
After a number of community complaints, Ōpōtiki District Council have confirmed progress has been made for work to begin.
Council said it bought rocks from Ministry of Business Innovation Employment, which were at the harbour, and are in the final stages of confirming a contractor for the work.
Work on the boulder wall construction is set to begin in one to two weeks.
The Council also acknowledge the two Pōhutukawa are not doing well.
It said the plan was to keep them safe until machines could move them, but tides have made this difficult.
If they cannot be saved, they will be replaced it said.
