The road reopened to light vehicles on Tuesday, but a timeline for heavy vehicles is yet to be provided.
The road was closed throughout February, following a large slip caused by heavy rain in January and was reopened this week.
Whakatāne District Council said a geotechnical inspection confirmed "any further slip risks on Herepuru Road have been adequately managed."
At this stage, the road is open to one lane for light vehicles.
Council said this was to keep traffic away from the "cracked and slumping" part of the road.
It said a timeframe for restricted heavy vehicle use is unknown.
Further work and monitoring is required before Council decides what future access could look like.
An update is expect on March 6th.
Until then heavy vehicles are required to use Manawahē Road until further notice.
It also warned during future heavy rain warnings the bluff section of Herepuru Road will close as a precaution.
