91 Reaches $3 Mark in Whakatāne

BP Whakatāne is the first fuel station in the area to reach $3 for 91

95 reached $3 across multiple fuel stations earlier in the week, with 91 hitting the $3 mark at Whakatāne BP this morning.

According to the fuel price monitoring app Gaspy, Gull in Edgecumbe is not far off $3, at $2.96 for 91 this morning.

Prices are similar through out the Eastern Bay, with the cheapest 91 fuel available at Landing Road Gull for $2.78 a litre.

Waiotahi, Awakeri, Tāneatua fuel stations are all around the $2.80 mark.

The cheapest 91 fuel in the area according to Gaspy is Allied Ōhope at $2.76 per litre.

Three Eastern Bay fuel stations sit over the $3 mark for 95, with the rest around the $2.90 mark.

According to Gaspby the cheapest 95 fuel is currently at Gull Edgecumbe for $2.73 per litre.

Diesel is not far off reaching $3 either.

Other stations across the area are sitting around $2.80.

Waihau Bay diesel prices are significantly cheaper at $2.31 per litre.

Gaspy reports fuel at Gull Edgcumbe is at $2.96 despite diesel supply running out earlier this morning.

Manager of Gull Edgecumbe confirmed there was no diesel and a truck is due to arrive later this afternoon.

One customer told 1xx she went in at lunchtime to get 95 and prices were at $3.11.

She said there was no diesel when she arrived and was told a fuel truck would arrive at 3pm.

Whakatāne BP manager Sheena Wallace said she has never seen prices increase this fast.

"Just in the last week, I think it's gone up about 50 cents," she said.

Despite the sharp increase, business in the past week has been busier than the summer period.

"Maybe a bit of panic buying?"

Her customers have not had a bad reaction to the increase.

"There's nothing they can do about it. It's just going with it, I think."

Supply to the station has not been an issue so far, but "I know that we've got at least 50 days supply within the country," she said.

Once this runs out she does not know what will happen next.

"We'll just wait and see," she said.

The Ministerial Economic Security and Supply Chains Group met for the first time yesterday to give strategic oversight to agencies to ensure petrol, diesel and jet fuel supplies are not disrupted.

Associate Minister for Energy, Minister Shane Jones said the rapidly evolving situation in the Middle East and the impact this has on fuel supply chains is being monitored closely.

“If circumstances change, we will swiftly notify the public."

"There is no need for panic or over-reaction.”  he said.
