Motorists travelling from the Eastern Bay of Plenty towards Matawai on State Highway 2 are being urged to travel with extreme caution due to icy conditions.
NZTA crews have been using grit on the road; however, current conditions and rainfall have caused the ice to form again.
The road was closed to heavy vehicles this morning, but has since reopened.
NZTA said all vehicles will be piloted through the area near the Fulton Hogan Quarry.
“Please drive with extreme caution and to the conditions and adhere to any guidance from the pilot vehicles,” it said.
“Crews are actively monitoring the road.”
