State Highway 30 is now open following a single vehicle crash between Te Teko Road and Galatea Road around 11:40am.
Police said the driver appears to be seriously injured.
One ambulance, a rapid response unit and an operations manager attended the scene.
St John said staff treated one patient in serious condition and transported them to Whakatāne Hospital.
Motorists were advised to take alternate routes and avoid the area. IMAGE // NZTA
NZTA closed the road shortly after the crash.

The road has since reopened.
This is the second crash on State Highway 30 today.
Around 9:00am, emergency services recieved reports of a single vehicle truck crash near the State Highway 34 intersection.
Police said the eastbound lane was blocked, and emergency services left the scene around 11:10am.
There were no injuries reported.
