Whakatāne District Council said water quality testing has confirmed results have returned to safe levels and the health warning placed over the lower Whakatāne River area has now been lifted.
Council said it is safe for the community to swim, fish and gather kaimoana in the lower river area and near the entrance.
Warning signs installed along the river were removed yesterday morning.
Council thanks the community for its patience while repairs, monitoring and testing were carried.
The temporary health warning was put in place on 27 August 2026, following a watsewater discharge that occurred after a sewer pipe was damaged during work to replace a stormwater culvert.
