A heavy rain watch has been issued for the Bay of Plenty, with the region in for a wet weekend.
Between 3.00pm on Saturday, 29 August, and 3.00am on Sunday, 30 August, MetService forecasts the region east of the Rangitāiki River will experience periods of heavy rain, with a chance of rainfall amounts reaching or exceeding warning criteria.
MetService said there is a high chance the watch will be upgraded to a warning, particularly in localised areas if downpours occur.
Another watch has been issued for the rest of the Bay of Plenty from 12.00pm to midnight on Saturday, 29 August.
MetService said there is a moderate chance of conditions reaching warning criteria.
Residents are being urged to clear drains and gutters to prepare for the heavy rain and avoid low-lying areas due to the risk of rising streams and rivers and surface flooding.
MetService said there is also a risk of slips.
Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions and take care on the roads.
Dan Bramley, the Bay of Plenty Regional Council’s Eastern Region senior maritime officeris encouraging boaties to check and prepare their vessels ahead of the weather.
He said the Regional Council’s Flood and Harbourmaster teams are monitoring the situation and will provide updates as required.
