MetService have issued an orange heavy rain warning for the Bay of Plenty west of Kawerau, for Wednesday afternoon into the early hours of Thursday.
The warning is in place from 10:00am Wednesday, 24 June until 2:00am Thursday, 25 June.
MetService said 70 to 120mm of rain is expected, with peak rates of 25 to 40 mm/h in localised down pours.
It said thunderstorms are possible.
There is a "low chance" of upgrading to a red warning.
MetService warn streams and rivers may rise rapidly, with a possibility of surface flooding, slips, and difficult driving conditions.
"Clear your drains and gutters to prepare for heavy rain. Avoid low-lying areas and drive cautiously."
A heavy rain watch is in place for the Bay of Plenty, about and east of Kawerau, from 3:00pm today, until 5:00am tomorrow.
MetService said there is a moderate chance of upgrading to a warning.
NZTA are urging motorists to drive with extra care and caution today.
"Drivers should be ready for weather related hazards – localised flooding, slips, rockfalls, and slippery roads – and must drive to the conditions," it said.
"Drivers should increase their following distance, reduce speed, avoid sudden braking, and use headlights if visibility is poor."
The Transport Agency said it has contractors monitoring and ready to respond to any transport network impacts.
"People are encouraged to check road and weather conditions before they travel. Roads may close at short notice if necessary."
