MetService have issued an orange heavy rain warning for the Bay of Plenty west of Kawerau, for Wednesday afternoon into the early hours of Thursday.
The warning is in place from 3:00pm Wednesday, 24 June until 3:00am Thursday, 25 June.
MetService said 70 to 120mm of rain is expected, with peak rates of 25 to 40 mm/h in localised down pours.
It said thunderstorms are possible.
There is a "low chance" of upgrading to a red warning.
MetService warn streams and rivers may rise rapidly, with a possibility of surface flooding, slips, and difficult driving conditions.
"Clear your drains and gutters to prepare for heavy rain. Avoid low-lying areas and drive cautiously."
