MetService has issued an orange heavy rain warning for the Bay of Plenty, about and east of Rotorua.

The warning is in place from 9am Monday, 29 December until 2am Tuesday, 30 December.

MetService says the region can expect 80mm to 120mm of rain, possibly causing streams and rivers to rise, surface flooding, slips, and difficult driving conditions.

It is advising people to clear their drains and gutters in preparation for the heavy rainfall.

There is a minimal chance of upgrading to a Red Warning.

A warning is also in place for the Gisborne region from 9am Monday, 29 December until 3am Tuesday, 30 December.

The Bay of Plenty, west of Rotorua, has a heavy rain watch in place until midnight Monday, December 29.

We’re committed to keeping the Eastern Bay informed with accurate, timely coverage.
