NZTA said following public consultation, a second toll point will be installed for vehicles traveling between Domain Road and Pāpāmoa East Interchanges. Vehicles traveling the full Tauranga Eastern Link Toll Road will pay the exsisting toll rates.
NZTA said installing a second tolling point for road users between the Domain Road and Pāpāmoa East Interchanges, means Tauranga Eastern Link Toll road users will be directly contributing to constrcution and maintainence of the road.
Those using the Pāpāmoa East Interchange for travel to the Domain Road Interchange will have a toll free period until late 2026, until the second toll point is installed.
Once installed, motorists traveling between between the two points will be tolled at a lower rate than those using the full Eastern Link Road, reflecting the shorter distance NZTA said.
Current toll rates will continue to apply for travel between Paengaroa and the Pāpāmoa East Interchange.
Toll prices between Pāpāmoa East and Domain Road Interchanges will be $1.10 for light vehicles and $2.80 for heavy vehicles.
Those traveling the full length of the road or using the road from Paengaroa to Pāpāmoa East Interchange will continue to pass through the existing toll point and pay the current toll rates.
Those rates are currently $2.30 for light vehicles and $5.60 for heavy vehicles.
NZTA Regional Manager of System Design, Waikato and Bay of Plenty Susan Collins said the decision reflects the need to ensure the transport system is sustainably funded to deliver benefits sooner.
“Tolling is a tool used around the world to accelerate investment in roading infrastructure, and the additional toll point will allow this approach to be applied in New Zealand more effectively."
"It also ensures those who benefit from new and improved roads share in the cost of building them, enabling infrastructure to be delivered sooner and more efficiently.”
Documents related to the consultation will be published on the NZTA website in due course.
