Hato Hone St John said eight people have been injured in the crash, and a helicopter was dispatched to the scene.
Hato Hone St John said crews were called to a traffic accident on Waiotahe Beach Road at 8:30 this evening.
Four Ambulances, a Critical Care Unit, an Operations Manager, two helicopters and the Major Incident Support Team attended the scene.
It said eight patients have been assessed, with injuries ranging from minor to critical.
NZTA said due to a serious crash, State Highway 2 between Paerata Ridge Rd and Waiotahi Drifts Boulevard.
NZTA said a detour is in place until further notice, and asked for motorists to allow for an extra 30 minutes of travel time.
Eastbound traffic will need to turn right onto Paerata Ridge Rd, left onto Old Cemetery Road, straight ahead onto Crooked Road, and drive straight ahead onto Hukutaia Road before rejoining State Highway 2.
Westbound traffic would follow these detours in reverse.
It said this detour is not suitable for heavy vehicles.
