Motorists heading to Gisborne will have to use an alternative route following a serious crash on State Highway 2/Matawai Road, Waipaoa this morning.
Motorists using State Highway 2 are advised there will be "extensive delays, of several hours, as a result of the State Highway 2/Matawai Road crash at Waipaoa."
"The diversion is also extensive and motorists, including those in commercial vehicles, are asked to delay travel or consider alternative options."
Police were notified of the two-vehicle crash, near McMillan Road, Waipaoa around 6.50am.
The road is expected to remain closed for some time while emergency services are at the scene.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area where possible, and to expect delays.
The Serious Crash Unit has been advised.
Hato Hone St John was notified of the crash at 6:49 this morning.
One ambulance and one rapid response vehicle responded to the scene.
One patient was transported to Gisborne Hospital in a serious condition.
NZTA said the road is closed between Te Karaka and Lavenham Road and will remain closed until further notice.
