Police are asking motorists to delay travel following a crash on at the State Highway 2 intersection with Western Drain Road.
Police said State Highway 2/Awakeri Road in Edgecumbe is blocked due to a two-vehicle crash shortly after 4:50pm.
Police media said the incident involved a car and motorcycle.
Police said initial indications suggest at least one person is critically injured.
The Serious Crash Unit is at the scene.
Hato Hone St John said the were called to the incident at 4:40pm.
Two ambulance, a Rapid Response Unit, an Operations Manager and a helicopter were dispatched to the scene.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand Shift Manager Ryan Geen said crews were alerted to an accident involving a car and motorcycle at 4:52pm.
Two volunteer crews from Edgecumbe were dispatched at 4:53 and arrived five minutes later.
The spokesperson said a person was removed from the vehicle and two patients were being seen by Hato Hone St John.
They said one person was in a critical condition, and a helicopter had been dispatched to the scene.
The fire crews remain on the scene alongside police and ambulance.
Police ask motorists to delay travel where possible, and said diversions are in place on State Highway 2 at Putiki Road and at State Highway 30.
NZTA said due to a serious crash near the SH2/Western Drain Road intersection, caution is advised along this route.
It said motorists should follow the directions of emergency services.
