Motorists travelling on State Highway 2 near Paengaroa are being urged to plan ahead, with the highway set to close this weekend for rail level crossing repairs.

SH2 will be closed at the rail crossing near the Te Puke Golf Course from 5.00am on Saturday, 12 September, until 6.00am on Monday, 14 September.

The New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) said KiwiRail crews will work around the clock during the closure as part of an upgrade aimed at improving safety and providing a smoother and more reliable crossing for both road and rail users.

A signposted detour via Maniatutu Road and Old Coach Road will be in place.

Drivers are being advised to allow extra time for their journeys and take care on local roads, particularly while increased traffic is using the detour route.

NZTA said access for residents, businesses, emergency services and essential vehicles will be maintained on either side of the closure where possible.

However, motorists should expect some short delays while work crews are operating.

For safety reasons, vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians will not be able to pass through the rail crossing area while the closure is in place.
