State Highway 2 between Matatā and Edgecumbe is closed following a truck spill, with motorists warned to expect delays while clean-up work takes place.
The highway was closed on Sunday evening, 18 October, between Sutherland Road and State Highway 34 after an incident involving a truck.
Police said the spill has affected approximately two kilometres of road between the State Highway 34 intersection and Caverhill Road.
The road is expected to remain closed for some time to allow crews to clean up the spill.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi advises motorists to avoid the area and follow the signposted detours.
Southbound traffic is being diverted via Thornton Road, then right onto West Bank Road.
The route is reversed for northbound traffic.
The closure was first reported at 8.34pm, with the latest update at 9.15pm advising the road would remain closed until further notice.
Motorists travelling through the area should allow extra time for their journeys and follow directions from road crews.
No reopening time has been confirmed.
