MetService said the centre of Cyclone Vaianu has made landfall near the Maketu Peninsula, and is heading towards the Bay of Plenty soon.

WDC strongly advise all those living in Ōhope, and coastal parts of Thornton and Whakatāne to evacuate, whether it's mandatory or not.
