Ōhope Beach's most loved attributes has once again been recognised.
Ōhope won Best Family Beach and was runner up in the Best Surf and Best Camping beaches in the 2023 New Zealand Herald's Best Beach competition.
The Herald stated, Ōhope’s western end is ideal for learning, excellent for safe surfing because the seafloor drops away gently, and the waves don’t break hard.
The Eastern Bay favourite was described as white-sand, warm-water beach, with pohutukawa, motels and campgrounds, icecream and fish ‘n’ chip shops.
Over the hill, Ōtarawairere Bay, took out the Best Hidden Gem Beach category.
It's a welcome addition to the Whakatāne District, complimenting its most Beautiful Towns and Cities Supreme Award won last year.
