This year's Lantern Festival in Ōpōtiki was the biggest in the event's 12-year history, with over 4,500 people flooding through the gates to get a piece of some true kiwi talent.
The event had a range of different family friendly entertainment, including acts by Ladi6, Sons of Zion and Ōpōtiki’s own Hori Shaw.
Ōpōtiki District Council’s Experience and Engagement Manager, Joseph Hayes said this year it easily broke all previous records. “Pre-covid we had some really big events by Ōpōtiki standards. The year Katchafire came we had more than 3000 people at the Festival, and that was mostly gate sales back then. We had a few quieter years post-covid but this year was just outstanding. Our set-up has grown with this event and people will have seen the new layout with food vendors and market stalls at the back Kids Zones near the middle and side, giving more room for dancing and crowds up front.”

But it wasn’t only the music lovers breaking records but this year…There were over 30 different vendors supplying food, drink and entertainment for the crowd. Hayes said that the vendors made comments to the organizers showing their appreciation for the atmosphere of the community during the day, and the positivity shown all round.
“Hori Shaw was a local favourite and the atmosphere was absolutely electric when he was joined on stage by his whānau and Ōpōtiki Mai Tawhiti for the final song in his set. I think that moment will be remembered by the crowd for a long time.”
The council also expressed gratitude to those who worked behind the scenes to keep the event running. “So much goes into making sure all the pieces come together on the day from toilets to water and charging stations for the eftpos machines, security, spaces for performers, stage, sound, lights, vendors, crowds and queuing. There are so many helpers and contractors who work so hard to make it happen.”
