Ōpōtiki Man Faces Raft Of Charges Following Police Chase

A 34-year-old Ōpōtiki man is facing a number of charges following a fleeing driver incident yesterday.

Police were called to an address on SH35 in Ōpōtiki, after receiving reports of a person being blocked in a driveway by a man who then threatened and assaulted them.

"The suspect was stopped by Police at a nearby petrol station but fled after speaking with officers. Police followed the vehicle and observed it driving in a concerning manner through Ōpōtiki, crossing the centreline and losing control," a Police spokesperson says.

A man was taken into custody a short time later and appeared in the Whakatāne District Court today.

He is due to reappear in the Ōpōtiki District Court on July 25th.

The man has been charged with assaults with intent to injure, theft, threatening to kill, escaping custody, failing to stop, reckless driving, receiving property, and possession of an offensive weapon.
