The weeks ending 2022 proved to be exceptionally busy for the Aerocool Rescue Helicopter in the Bay of Plenty.
The rescue helicopter carried out 51 missions throughout the region in December, which was a 73% increase on November, making it the second busiest month of the year.
Missions included 25 inter-hospital transfers, 9 medical events, 12 rural or farming-related incidents, 4 motor vehicle incidents and 1 rescue. Data shows, rural missions doubled in December compared to November.
One mission in early December saw the helicopter dispatched to Te Kaha, where a women in her 60s had fallen and sustained serious leg injuries. She was then flown to Tauranga Hospital.
On December 13th, the helicopter was dispatched to the Te Kaha Medical Centre for a toddler who was suffering from a fever. The patient was in a serious condition and was flown to Whakatāne Hospital.
Christmas Day saw the rescue helicopter called to Matata for a young patient who had sustained serious facial injuries. The patient was flown to Tauranga Hospital for further treatment.
