Today marks World Car Free Day in the Eastern Bay.
The global event which encourages people out of their cars in favour of more sustainable modes of transport such as buses, bike or foot.
In response to the event, the Bay of Plenty Regional Council are offering free bus services across the region today.
Bay of Plenty Regional Counci aim for the initiative to promote how easy and cost-effective it is to catch a bus to alter long-term behaviour. Council hope for a change in the community, to encourage people to use buses as a great way of getting around the Bay.
In conjuction with the free bus fares, bus users will also be rewarded today with a free coffee voucher, valid for two days. Regional Council staff will be out on The Strand in Whakatāne handing out the vouchers.
