This Easter weekend, boaties in the Bay are being urged to cancel or postpone their time on the water, as ex-tropical Cyclone Tam is set to bring dangerous conditions to the region.

Heavy rain and strong winds are forecast, with MetService issuing a severe weather warning from tonight through to late Friday across the Bay of Plenty.

"The forecast and rough weather will bring swells of up to 5 metres, creating hazardous conditions for all boaties—experienced or not," said Bay of Plenty Regional Council Harbormaster, Jon Jon Peters.

He’s encouraging all skippers to check both the latest marine forecast and incoming weather predictions before carefully considering whether it’s safe to head out.

“This weekend will be rough, uncomfortable, and potentially dangerous. Safe boating practices are vital when faced with challenging weather,” he said.

Both his and the councils message is clear: residents and boat enthusiasts must make smart decisions to ensure the safety of themselves and all passengers aboard their vessels this Easter.
