Eastern Bay Athletes Win Big At 2022 BOP Sports Awards

The Bay of Plenty's top athletes were recognised on Friday night at the 2022 Forsyth Barr Bay of Plenty Sports Awards, held at the Rotorua Energy Events Centre.


The Eastern Bay was well represented as Whakatāne's Hayden Wilde and Ōhope's Lisa Carrington walked away with the top prizes.


Wilde, who won bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and silver at the Commonwealth Games, was named Sportsman Of The Year in the awards.


Ōhope's golden girl, Lisa Carrington who became New Zealand’s most successful Olympian this year, was also named Sportswoman Of The Year.


A Bay Venues statement stated, Wilde was also named Athlete of the Year, by the Adams Academy – a high-performance sport programme he is a member of at the University of Waikato Adams Centre in Mount Maunganui.


Miles Hammond of the Whakatāne Rowing Club and Gary Waller of Eastern Bay Canoe Racing Club were also both named as recipients of the Sport Bay of Plenty Service to Sport.
