Eastern Bay Locals Recognised in 2025 King’s Birthday Honours

Several Eastern Bay residents have been recognised in the 2025 King’s Birthday Honours, which celebrate the contributions of everyday New Zealanders.
The Honours list is issued annually by King Charles III to acknowledge individuals who have made significant contributions to their communities and fields of work.
Local Recipients:
Robert Edwards – Ōpōtiki
Awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to the community and governance. Edwards joined the Whakatōhea Māori Trust Board in 2004 and has served as chair since 2006, playing a key role in iwi leadership and development.
Diane Turner – Whakatāne
Also awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to governance, seniors, and Māori. Turner has demonstrated strong leadership during times of national crisis and has made notable contributions to improving the wellbeing of older New Zealanders.
Gavin Dennis – Matatā
Awarded the King’s Service Medal for services to Fire and Emergency New Zealand and the community. Dennis has served in the Matatā Volunteer Fire Brigade since 1987 and currently holds the position of Chief Fire Officer.
Rosemary Sloman – Whakatāne
Also awarded the King’s Service Medal, for services to the community. Sloman has dedicated over 40 years to volunteering across a range of community initiatives in the Eastern Bay.
