Flights Cancelled & Delayed Due To Volcanic Ash From Whakaari/White Island

Flights have been cancelled and delayed across the Bay of Plenty this morning due to volcanic ash from Whakaari/White Island.

"This morning, we have cancelled 10 flights and delayed three out of Tauranga and Rotorua due to volcanic ash from Whakaari/White Island on the flight path," Air New Zealand Chief Operational Integrity and Safety Officer, Captain David Morgan says.

"We are continuing to monitor the movement of the ash,"

"The safety of our people and our customers is our utmost priority,"

"We advise customers travelling today to keep an eye on the Air NZ app or our website for the latest information on their flight.” Morgan says.

According to GNS, there has been no change in activity on Whakaari/White Island.

"The decision to cancel flights out of Tauranga is an operational decision from Air New Zealand," GNS say.

"The Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC) issued an advisory yesterday that included Tauranga and Rotorua and the airlines have made an operational call based on that."
