The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) has approved funding to construct two new tear-drop roundabouts on either side of the State Highway 2 (SH2) Waiotahe River Bridge, in a move aimed at improving road safety.

Minister of Transport Chris Bishop announced the funding last Friday, marking the final stage of the Wainui Road to Ōpōtiki safety improvement project.

“Located on a sweeping curve, the intersections of SH2 with Ōhiwa Beach Road and Waiotahe Valley Back Road are considered high-risk,” said Mr Bishop. “Between 2014 and 2023, there were two fatalities, one serious injury, and three minor injuries at these sites. Upgrades to these intersections are critical for improving safety for local road users.”

Mr Bishop said the current road layout presents significant visibility and safety challenges.

“With poor forward visibility and constrained shoulders, the current alignment makes it difficult for drivers on SH2 to see vehicles turning right onto or off the highway. NZTA has now confirmed funding to replace these high-risk intersections with two new tear-drop roundabouts.”

The next stage of the project includes detailed design work, finalising land acquisition, applying for resource consents, and securing a contractor for construction.

The $10 million project is expected to begin construction in mid-2026 and take approximately 12 months to complete.

“I want to thank the local community in advance for their patience as this important work is carried out. I look forward to construction starting as soon as NZTA is ready to proceed,” Minister Bishop said.
