Transport links between the Whakatāne and Ōpōtiki districts were officially restored at 9am this morning, following major disruptions caused by recent flooding.

Several days of heavy rainfall triggered widespread slips, surface flooding, road washouts, and power outages across the Eastern Bay of Plenty. As a result, many roads were closed, communities were isolated, and residents faced delays to travel, cancelled work, and limited access to essential services.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of council staff, contractors, and emergency crews, a key route between the districts has now been cleared and is once again passable.

Whakatāne District Council Duty Controller Nicholas Woodley described the reopening as a significant milestone but urged caution on the roads.

“While we’re pleased to have restored connection with our neighbours in the Ōpōtiki District, the roads are still in a fragile state, and we’re asking everyone to drive with extreme care,” said Mr Woodley.

Currently, Wainui Road is reduced to one lane at the S Bends, with stop/go traffic controls in place. Waiotahi Bluffs (SH2) also remains down to one lane. However, Matakerepūru (SH2) is now fully open, with both lanes operational.

Mr Woodley acknowledged the collective effort behind the swift recovery.

“Council staff and contractors have pulled out all the stops to restore access as quickly and safely as possible. We’re incredibly proud of their efforts."

“We also want to sincerely thank our communities for their resilience, patience, and kindness throughout this event. Your support means everything during a response like this.”

While this reopening marks a major step forward, some roads and local areas are still dealing with the aftermath of the severe weather.

Further updates on closures, repair progress, and safety information will continue to be provided online.
