Health Warning In Force For Section Of Ōhope Beach

A section of Ōhope Beach has been temporarily closed due to a wastewater discharge.


Whakatāne District Council identified a wastewater discharge yesterday at Millers Stream, opposite the Ōhope Christian Camp.


A health warning is now in place and the stream plus the beach in the surrounding area is closed for the next 24 hours, or until sample test results indicate no further risk.


The area of the beach closed extends from Mair Street (near Cadera) to the beach access at 85 Pohutukawa Avenue.


People are advised not to swim, fish or gather shellfish until the health warning has been lifted.


Whakatāne District Council have placed signs in the affected area. Water testing is underway, with first results expected later today.
