Homicide Investigation Launched After Woman’s Death in Awakeri

A homicide investigation has officially been launched following the death of a woman in Awakeri on Thursday afternoon.

District Manager for Criminal Investigations, Detective Inspector Lew Warner, confirmed that emergency services were called to a property on State Highway 30 around 4:30pm after receiving reports of a serious assault.

Despite receiving medical attention at the scene, the woman sadly died.

Another woman has been taken into custody and is expected to appear in the Whakatāne District Court today, charged with murder.

Police are not currently seeking anyone else in relation to the incident.

Officers are now working to establish the full circumstances of what occurred, with a scene examination continuing at the property.

The community can expect to see an increased police presence in the area while the investigation is underway.
