Man In Custody Following Crash Between Quad Bike & Train

A 40-year old man has been taken into custody following a crash between a quad bike and train near Lake Matahina on Friday.

Emergency services received report of the crash on a track just before 10am.

"A vehicle had collided with a freight train heading from Kawerau to Murupara," a Kiwi Rail spokesperson says.

Police searched for the individual believed on the quad bike and eventually located him unharmed nearby later in the afternoon.

"It appears they were allegedly tampering with the track to steel metal," a Police spokesperson says.

"The 40-year-old man was taken into custody for breach of bail and further charges are being considered."
