The Motu Trails Charitable Trust maintenance team can now clear over 30km of track up to 40% faster, thanks to a $4,782 grant from Trust Horizon.
The funding has allowed the Trust to purchase a suite of electric tools, significantly improving the team’s efficiency and safety as they maintain the popular trail network, which includes the Dune Trail and Pakihi Track, all part of the New Zealand Cycle Trails. These tracks are well-used by cyclists, walkers, and runners, both locals and visitors alike.
The Motu Trails Charitable Trust is solely responsible for maintaining the frequently used tracks. The maintenance team is on-site at least twice a week, and even more often following poor weather, to ensure the trails remain safe.
Trail Manager Jim Robinson, who also works hands-on with the maintenance crew, highlighted the importance of their work.
“As a cycle track, any rocks or debris on the path are a potential safety hazard, so keeping it in good condition is a must,” Robinson explains. “Pakihi in particular is so dynamic, the track moves constantly, so we need to get out there regularly.”
Previously, the team relied almost entirely on manual tools like rakes, spades, and pruning saws.
The grant, approved in November 2024, funded the purchase of an electric leaf blower, cordless trimmer, chainsaw, hedge trimmer, cordless pruner, plus batteries and a multi-battery charger.
According to Robinson, the difference is remarkable.
“It used to take three people walking along the trail with rakes to clear leaves and rocks. Now, with the leaf blower, one person can do the job of two-and-a-half people, and do a much better job of it.”
The new tools have boosted efficiency by an estimated 20–40%, allowing the team to redirect time and energy toward further trail improvements.
Administrator Nikki Slade Robinson emphasized the safety benefits of the upgrade.
“The battery pruning saw and chainsaw stop immediately when you take your finger off the trigger. The pruning saw is compact but very effective. If a tree comes down and branches hang over the track, they can now be cleared much more safely and precisely.”
The maintenance team is enjoying the improved efficiency, convenience, sustainability, and safety the electric tools provide, ensuring the Motu Trails continue to be a safe and enjoyable experience for all users.
