One man is in custody after attempted break in to the Kawerau Police Station.

This morning a 30-year-old man has been taken into custody after attempting to gain entry to the Kawerau Police Station at 2.50am this morning.


Kawerau Area Response Manager, Senior Sergeant Al Fenwick, reports that one officer was inside the station, when windows and the doors were smashed.


The offender did not manage to enter the station, and fled the scene in a vehicle.

Police then located a pickaxe nearby.


The suspect was later located within the Cobham Drive area.


Fenwick, commends the attending staff to their incident, for their rapid response, as well as thanking the Kawerau community for their cooperation and understanding during the incident.


The suspect is now due to appear in the Whakatāne District Court today, charged with intentional damage and possession of an offensive weapon.
