A woman was struck by a concrete truck on Landing Road, Whakatāne this morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene near the Eivers Road roundabout at around 8:43am. One ambulance responded and transported the woman in a serious condition to Whakatāne Hospital.

An officer at the site of the incident told our newsroom that the woman appeared in good spirits and was heard laughing while ambulance staff attended her.

Police blocked the section of Landing Road between the Eivers Road roundabout and Hawera Street, resulting in backed up traffic both ways. Whakatāne District Council helped to direct traffic around the cordon.

Rhys Jones was on his way to work when Police stopped the traffic just a few cars ahead of him. He said the concrete truck was blocking one lane but that it wasn't clear what had occurred.

The truck, belonging to Beulah Services, appeared to be leaving a worksite when the incident occurred. The driver of the truck was said to be "gutted".

The road was reopened around 11am.
