Police continue to investigate an alleged arson attack at Kawerau South School over the weekend.
"At about 12:10am Police were notified that a fire had caused significant damage to a portion of the school’s playground," a Police spokesperson said.
Enquiries to locate CCTV footage are ongoing, Police said.
Kawerau South School posted on their Facebook page on Saturday afternoon. The post said the fire caused significant damage to the "slide area and climbing frame of the playground."
In a Facebook post this morning, Principal Raylene Gage-Te Hau extended her thanks to the community - noting the support has been heartwarming.
"In the face of such adversity, the outpouring of support from our local and wider hapori has been truly heartwarming, this has provided us with the strength to overcome this setback and rebuild our beloved playground." Gage-Te Hau says.
Police ask anyone with any information or witnessed anyone acting suspiciously in the area to contact them on 105 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
