The Rotary Club's annual trolley derby gave children a thrill this morning as they raced down a hill at the Waiewe Reserve in Whakatāne.

Young Rotarians from Trident and Whakatāne High School joined in too.

President-Elect of the Rotary Club, Brigitte Hoskins encouraged Whakatāne teenagers to join the local Rotaract Club.

She said they were always looking for youth to be a part of their organisation to help with events like the Trolley Derby Day.

"We're so lucky, we've got about six from Whakatāne High School today and five from Trident."

Youth organisation Blue Light lent the helmets for the event and the Whakatāne Men's Shed built the trolleys for the kids to race.

The winner of the day, Toby Boswell, 9, had built his own trolley in three days, with help from his cousin.

Toby took home the trophy also made by the Whakatāne Men's Shed and will enjoy bragging rights, for the fastest trolley, until April 2026.

Constable Kim Welsch and School Community Officer for the Whakatāne Police said it was a "great turnout".

"Already some kids have turned up, really nervous, didn't want to have a go but they have and they've thoroughly enjoyed it so it's great to see people getting out there and just giving it a go."
