Commuters travelling between Whakatāne and Tauranga are being advised to allow more time for their journey with a second area of roadworks starting on State Highway 2 from next week.

NZTA will start work on State Highway 2 next Wednesday near Rogers Road in Pukehina in preparation for a road rebuild.

The rebuild worksite is said to be approximately 1.3km long, starting west of Rogers Road.

"The initial phase includes vegetation clearing and removing topsoil and grass from the road shoulders. The process involves digging out the existing road layers and replacing them layer by layer, followed by surfacing, sweeping and line marking," NZTA say.

Work will take place Monday to Friday from 6am to 6pm, with stop/go traffic management in place. NZTA expect the work to take around 10 weeks to complete, weather permitting.

This follows chipsealing works already underway on State Highway 2 through the Matatā straights. NZTA says lane closures with stop/go traffic management are in place, with speed restrictions to remain until sweeping and line-marking are completed.

NZTA ask motorists to slow down and allow more time on their journey as the works continue.

Update road information can be found on the NZTA Journey Planner online.
