Severance Hearing Today Against GNS Science

A severance hearing, relating to the 2019 Whakaari White Island eruption will take place, this morning.

Today's hearing will see GNS Science intend to get one of its charges, of alleged health and safety breaches, severed.

It's being charged with failing to ensure the safety of the helicopter pilots it hired, to take its workers to Whakaari White Island.

GNS were previously accused, of not ensuring the safety of others, on the island.

However, that charge was dismissed by Judge Evangelos Thomas, last October.

Judge Thomas ruled, Worksafe's case was weakened by a previous decision to drop charges against the National Emergency Management Agency

The remaining health and safety charge against GNS, relating to the safety of helicopter pilots, will go to trial.

The hearing starts at 10am, in the Whakatāne District Court.

Another case review hearing is set down for next month, before the trial begins, in July.

The charges don't relate to the events of the eruption, or the rescue efforts.
