New Zealand Food Safety has now lifted the shellfish biotoxin warning for the Bay of Plenty coastline.

The warning, which covered the coast from Whakatāne to Mount Maunganui, was issued on August 13th following the detection of toxins.

At the time, New Zealand Food Safety deputy director-general Vincent Arbuckle had said routine tests on tuatua from the area had detected paralytic shellfish poisoning toxin levels above the safe limit.

Arbuckle explained that warnings remain in place until re-testing confirms that the shellfish is safe to consume, stating: “NZFS requires two clear samples taken over two weeks to remove a warning, to ensure public safety.”

The public health warning against collecting shellfish in the area was officially lifted on Friday.
