Six people have been left injured, including one in a critical condition, following a two vehicle crash in Waiotahe last night.

Emergency services were called to the scene on State Highway 2, Waiotahe around 8pm.

St John responded with four ambulances and two rapid response vehicles.

"Six patients were assessed at the scene, with one patient transported (by ambulance) to Tauranga Hospital in a critical condition and the remaining five patients were transported to (by ambulance) to Waikato Hospital all in a moderate condition," a St John spokesperson says.

The crash forced the closure of the highway near Appleton Road for several hours whilst the Serious Crash Unit worked at the scene.

Police say the road later re-opened around 2am.
