Six People In Hospital Following Waioeka Gorge Crash

Six people are in hospital following a single-vehicle crash on State Highway 2 in the Waioeka Gorge last night.


Emergency services were called to the crash near The Monument on Waioeka Road, between Wairata Road and Matawai Road at around 7.20pm.


Police advised six people were in the vehicle when it left the road and crashed into a creek.

Fire and Emergency sent with three trucks from Ōpōtiki and Matawai to the scene.


"The car was down a 15m bank. However, no one was trapped and all managed to get out of the vehicle." a Fire and Emergency spokesperson says.


St John responded with two helicopters and two ambulances and one manager.


"The crews assessed six patients at the scene, transporting 2 x serious condition patients to Whakatane Hospital (by helicopter), and 2 x moderate condition and 2 x minor condition patients to Whakatane Hospital (by ambulance)." a St John spokesperson says.
