State Highway 2 has closed between Waiotahe Valley Back Rd & Paerata Ridge Rd, west of
Ōpōtiki, due to a large slip that fell overnight in the Waiotahe Beach area.
Waka Kotahi expect the road to be closed for most of the day.
The slip fell in the early hours of this morning following a period of heavy rain in the region. One person was involved in a single-vehicle accident after 5am this morning due to the fallen slip, and was treated for minor injuries.
Motorists are asked to detour via Waiotahe Valley Back Road, Verrall Road and Paerata Ridge Road. However, the detour is said to not be suitable for HPMV.
Those travelling through should expect long delays as heavy vehicle freight are piloted through this detour route periodically.
This new slip comes only a short time after another large slip which fell on this stretch of highway on October 19th, where approximately 10,000 cubic metres of material came down onto the road.
Waka Kotahi say, the region has experienced significant rainfall, coastal surges and strong winds this year, all of which puts pressure on a roading network that is already susceptible to unstable geology.
