The sunny Bay of Plenty has been chosen as the next location to host the world’s top athletes, with Tauranga set to stage a series of World Triathlon events over the next three years.
Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston says the Government is thrilled to support these high-profile events, which are expected to provide a significant boost to both local tourism and the national economy.
“Over the three years, the events are expected to attract more than 6,000 international visitors, generating 100,000 international visitor nights, and contributing $25 million in tourism visitor spend,” said Upston.
She added that the 2028 World Triathlon Championship Final alone is projected to bring in more than 45,000 international competitors and supporters.
The events scheduled for Tauranga include:
World Triathlon World Cup – 2026
World Triathlon Championship Series – 2027
World Triathlon Championship Final – 2028
This marks the first time in over 16 years that these prestigious events will take place on New Zealand soil.
To support the successful delivery of the events, the Government will invest $2.65 million from the Major Events Fund.
“Major sporting events like these attract an international following from athletes and sport enthusiasts alike,” said Minister Upston.
She pointed to the success of last year’s Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Taupō, which attracted 15,000 international visitors and generated $23 million in local visitor spending, and $50 million nationwide.
Each of the Tauranga events will feature live global broadcasts, designed to engage a wide international audience and highlight New Zealand as a destination for world-class sport.
“New Zealand has a strong history in triathlon, and these events will be a fantastic opportunity for Kiwis to see our elite athletes compete on home soil,” Upston said.
“We’re proud to bring these international sporting events to Aotearoa, supporting high-performance sport, boosting sport tourism, and showcasing our country on the world stage.”
