Bay of Plenty MP Tom Rutherford and Tauranga MP Sam Uffindell have announced that Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology will return to regional governance from 1 January 2026. The change will restore decision-making power to the local community across Tauranga and the wider Bay of Plenty.

MP Rutherford highlighted that the institute currently delivers around 200 programmes to over 14,000 students in the region.

“Returning to local governance means Toi Ohomai’s programmes can better reflect the needs of local employers, helping more people into jobs that support our region’s growth,” he said.

“Polytechnics like Toi Ohomai are more than education providers. They play a vital role in supporting businesses, creating opportunities for school leavers, and helping workers upskill while staying connected to their communities.”

He added that bringing governance closer to home would ensure vocational training is shaped by those who understand the region’s workforce needs.

The institute will continue working closely with Bay of Plenty employers and industries to deliver relevant skills where and when they’re needed most.

Toi Ohomai operates campuses in Rotorua, Taupō, Tauranga, Tokoroa, and Whakatāne.

MP Sam Uffindell noted that the changes will help the institute deliver more flexible and financially sustainable training aligned with the employment needs of towns, cities, and rural communities.

“These changes are part of the Education and Training (Vocational Education and Training System) Amendment Bill, currently before the Education and Workforce Select Committee. We expect the Bill to pass in October following public consultation,” he said.

“We’re rebuilding vocational education to truly deliver, giving students the skills they need, helping local businesses thrive, and backing the future success of our region.”
