Ōhope Beach Golf Links has received a $90,000 grant from Trust Horizon to help them make their greens even greener...both in color and in sustainability.
Until recently, the Club’s 18-hole course was maintained using aging, petrol-powered machinery, much of which had gone untouched for years. The new funding has enabled the club to invest in a full suite of electric and battery-operated ground maintenance equipment, significantly reducing its reliance on fossil fuels.
“The Tru-Turf electric greens roller is the first fully electric roller in the Eastern Bay" said Head Greenkeeper James Rawsthorne. "It’s helping us produce higher-quality, smoother rolling greens, without the noise or emissions of a petrol engine.”
The response from greenkeeping staff has been overwhelmingly positive, and the environmental benefits are already noticeable. The transition to electric equipment has improved air quality around the course and made daily tasks easier and more efficient for staff.
Trust Horizon Deputy Chair David Bulley emphasized the club’s importance to the local community. “The Links course has been largely built and maintained by volunteer members and has become an important asset both for local and visiting golfers, with non-golfers also welcomed to visit the club house café and enjoy the special surroundings,”
Looking ahead, the club plans to continue its sustainability journey by installing solar panels to charge electric golf carts and eventually investing in an electric tractor once it becomes commercially available.
