GNS Science has confirmed that volcanic activity at Whakaari/White Island is currently showing signs of decline.

Webcam and satellite data indicate that while steam and gas plumes remain visible from the coastline, no significant ash emissions have been detected over the past two weeks.

Due to unfavourable weather conditions, GNS scientists have been unable to conduct gas measurement and observation flights. As a result, they have not been able to confirm the current condition of the active vent or detect any substantial ash emissions directly.

"Due to our lack of on-island monitoring, it is possible that these conditions could change in the short term," said Duty Volcanologist Agnes Mazot.

Recent activity is consistent with minor but potentially declining eruptive behaviour. Consequently, the Volcanic Alert Level remains at 3, and the Aviation Colour Code stays at Orange. These levels reflect the ongoing volcanic activity as well as the uncertainty caused by the current limitations in monitoring.

GNS Science will continue to monitor the situation closely using camera and satellite data, and will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
